NEC to Host the 10th Anniversary Ceremony of the Voter’s Day

- Emphasizing on voter' s right to participate in voting without any difficulties and on freedom of political expression

- Hoping to make a harmonious society through an beautiful election not only a fair one 



The National Election Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Korea hosted the 10th anniversary ceremony of ‘Voter’s Day’ at the auditorium of the NEC Secretariat Office in Gwacheon on May 10th.

 

The Voter’s Day was enacted by law in 2012 aiming to remind voters of the importance of election which is the process of realization of sovereignty and voter’s right and responsibility as well as to heighten the sense of sovereignty.

 

The first democratic election which upheld universal, equal, direct and secret ballot principles was held on May 10, 1948 to elect the members of the Constituent Assembly for the first time in the Republic of Korea. With a view to commemorating this election day, May 10th had been designated for the Voter's Day. Also, it is because the Day holds great significance as the starting point of democracy in the Republic of Korea in that the Government of the Republic of Korea was established by the Constitution enacted by the first Constituent Assembly.

Noh Jeong-hee, the Chairperson of the NEC, people with merits and their family members, and the NEC commissioners participated in the event; the program included the anniversary video, award ceremony for the people with merits who contributed to developing election culture, and the commemorative speech by the Chairperson followed by the video of the award recipients’ remarks.

 

Chairperson Noh addressed that everyone should be able to participate in elections with an easy access to election information without any difficulties, and form and express their political views freely in order to ensure voter’s suffrage in practice. She also mentioned that the NEC will do its utmost to improve and implement the election systems in a direction where various opinions can be communicated and exchanged for our society.

 

In addition, she said that she hopes that voters keep in mind that they are the owners of the country and we will be able to see a beautiful and harmonious society through beautiful elections beyond fair ones with everyone’s efforts and interests in elections.
