NEC Installs Overseas Election Commissions for the 22nd National Assembly Election at 178 Diplomatic Missions Full-Fledged Overseas Election Management Begins on October 13 Starting October 13, the National Election Commission will install and operate the Overseas Election Commission for the 22nd National Assembly election at 178 embassies worldwide. The Overseas Election Commission will operate until May 10, 2024, and perform tasks such as voting management at overseas polling stations, preventing and cracking down on election crimes, and supervising election management affairs.
The Overseas Election Commission consists of up to 1) two members nominated by the National Election Commission, 2) one member each recommended by the political parties that formed the negotiating group in the National Assembly, and 3) one member recommended by the head of the diplomatic mission. Meanwhile, the Overseas Election Commission will not be installed in five embassies where the situation in the host country is unstable due to war, riots, etc.: the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ukraine, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Liby, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Yemen, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Sudan.
With the installation of the Overseas Election Commission, the National Election Commission begins full-fledged overseas election management, including operating an overseas election situation room. Based on its experience in successfully managing six overseas elections since the 19th National Assembly Election, the National Election Commission announced that it will do its best to fairly manage overseas elections and increase participation rates in the 22nd National Assembly Election. It is encourages the active participation of overseas Koreans. |
