NEC Prepares for Management of Elections in the Era of Generative AI

The National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea held its second special lecture on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for employees on Thursday, September 21. The lecture was to prepare for election management in the era of generative AI.

With recent advances in AI technology expected to bring changes to all sectors of society and have a significant impact on elections, the NEC prepared a total of three special lectures by AI experts for employees this year.

This one was given by Professor Kim Byeong-pil of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) under the theme of “Characteristics and Legal Issues of Generative AI Risks of Creating False Information and Seeking Countermeasures” specifically focused on the risks of creation of false information and manipulation of public opinion using AI.

Meanwhile, with the 22nd National Assembly elections to be held next year, the NEC is operating a task force team (AI-dedicated team) for responding to false information and slander and is proactively responding to false information that uses AI. The NEC is preparing operating standards for laws and regulations related to the use of AI.

The NEC announced that it plans to actively respond to environmental changes in the digital era for fair election management and that it hopes for a lot of interest from all walks of life, just as legal and institutional response measures are critical to this end.
